Athletic Training Room Therapeutic Modalities
- Ice: cryotherapy- the application of cold for the first aid of trauma to the musculoskeletal system. Used from the first day of injury for 5 minutes at least 4x/day.
- Moist Heat Packs: Thermotherapy- the application of heat to treat traumatic injuries. Used to decrease pain-spasm. Not used on most injuries until after 48-72hrs.
- Cold Whirlpool: also used for cryotherapy and can be used while performing range of motion exercises if needed. Water temperature should not be lower than 50degrees F.
- Warm Whirlpool: also used for thermotherapy and can also be used while performing range of motion exercises and to help increase blood flow to an area prior to sport. Water temperature should not be higher than 104 degrees F.
- Ultrasound: a deep heating modality and is used primarily for elevating tissue temperatures. It is an inaudible acoustic vibration of high frequency that may produce either thermal or nonthermal physiological effects.
- Electrical Stimulation: Electrotherapy used for pain modulation and/or muschle contraction.
